Symptoms of an ankle sprain

An ankle sprain is a common injury that occurs when the ligaments holding the ankle joint together are stretched or torn.

Typical symptoms of an ankle sprain include sharp, sharp pain, swelling, stiffness, difficulty walking or bearing weight on the affected ankle, and bruising around the injured area.

Sometimes a cracking or popping sound can be heard at the time of the sprain.

If you experience these symptoms after an ankle injury, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations.

Systemic severe sprains may require medical assessment.

Causes of an ankle sprain

An ankle sprain usually occurs when there is a sudden movement or excessive twisting of the ankle joint. Here are some of the common causes of an ankle sprain:

  1. Incorrect movement: Walking, running or jumping on an uneven or slippery surface can lead to a sprained ankle.
  2. Sports activities: Sports that involve fast movements, frequent changes of direction or physical contact can increase the risk of ankle sprains.
  3. Poor support: Wearing inappropriate or ill-fitting shoes that don't provide good ankle support can increase the risk of injury.
  4. Muscle weakness: Weak or unbalanced leg and ankle muscles can make the ankle joint more vulnerable to sprains.
  5. Previous injuries: A previous ankle sprain increases the risk of recurrence.

Taking appropriate precautions and exercising caution during physical activities is essential to reduce the risk of an ankle sprain.
