Plantar Fasciitis Syndrome

Fasciitis begins with a dull, intermittent pain in the heel that can progress to a persistent, sharp pain.a

Pain generally more present in the morning at the time of the first steps, after a prolonged period of sitting or at the beginning of a sporting activity.

Pain may also be present in the middle of the sole of the foot or near the toes.

May cause back pain or knees due to gait adjustment.

The causes

Plantar Fasciitis

  • Flat feet in pronation
  • Rigid feet with high arch
  • Prolonged standing position
  • Unsuitable, inadequate or overly worn shoes
  • Fasciitis can be due to over-exercise ("too much effort, too soon" syndrome)
  • Soft ground (running on sand)
  • Activities involving sudden stops and changes of direction
  • Stiffness of the Achilles tendon and calf muscles
  • Obesity
  • Aging

The treatment

Flexibility exercises for the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon
Joint manipulation and soft tissue work (Active Release Techniques and Graston) to correct foot biomechanics and reduce scar tissue
Medication (anti-inflammatory) as needed
Modification of the activities
Exercises to strengthen and stabilize the foot
Foot orthotics to treat or prevent the condition
Reduction of inflammation with ice (20 minutes / 2 hours) and complementary therapies such as neurocryotherapy and kinesio taping.
Cortisone injections as needed
Very rare surgical procedures
