Patellofemoral syndrome (chondromalacia)

In 50% of cases, knee pain is due to excessive exercise.

Accentuated by the knee flexion movements involving the quadriceps.

Resulting from irritation of the external portion of the patella due to compression against the femur.

Occurs very often in children and adolescents and almost always disappears with age.

Presentation

Patellofemoral syndrome (chondromalacia)

Knee pain that seems to have its origin on the inside of the knee.

Knee pain occurs when walking up or down stairs, after prolonged sitting, kneeling, jumping or wearing high-heeled shoes.

Usually presents without trauma but may follow a knee injury.

Without appropriated treatment, this condition can become recurrent and chronic. A dislocation of the patella is possible and arthritis in the joint may develop.

The causes

  • Misalignment of the patella in the femoral gutter
  • Anterior or repeated knee injuries
  • Flat or pronated feet
  • General misalignment of the lower limb
  • Exercise abuse causing knee pain ("too much effort, too soon" syndrome)
  • Sports involving running and jumping
  • Weakness of the quadriceps and muscles stabilizing the pelvis
  • Tight muscles on the external face and the back of the knee
